Somers, MD, PhD, joined the staff of Mayo Clinic in 1999, and is currently a consultant in the Department of Cardiovascular Diseases at Mayo Clinic's campus in Rochester, Minnesota, with joint appointments in the Division of Nephrology and Hypertension, (Department of Internal Medicine), and the Department of Physiology and Biomedical Engineering.

The College of Health Solutions and Mayo Clinic School of Medicine have joined together to offer Mayo students a unique opportunity to earn both an MD degree and a Master of Science degree in the science of health care delivery. The science of health care delivery is the study and design of systems, processes, leadership and management used to optimize health care delivery and health for all.

If a student is offered admission to the MD program, he or she may request to be considered for the MSTP at that time. Alternatively, if a student is not interviewed by the MSTP, he or she may request consideration by the MD only program prior to November 15, 2019. Once an applicant is interviewed by the MSTP, he or she can no longer be considered for the MD only program.

The University System of Georgia MD-PhD Program offers an integrated basic science and clinical training curriculum to provide the next generation of physician-scientists with the skills to engage compassionate patient care and lead efforts in translational and diseased-oriented biomedical discovery. Students may choose to complete the PhD component at eligible PhD programs at one of four.
